Knock Knock
Who’s there?
I’ll tell you in the PS…
But first, have you ever felt mentally drained before your day even begins?
Like your brain is stuck in overdrive, juggling commitments, unfinished tasks, and unresolved conversations?
Picture your brain like a computer with dozens of tabs open on your browser. Each tab represents something unfinished: a bill to pay, an email to send, or a difficult conversation you’re avoiding.
All those tabs? They’re open loops.
Just like a computer’s RAM (Random Access Memory), your brain has a limited capacity to focus.
When too many loops are left open, the system slows down, or worse, crashes.
A knock-knock joke is the simplest example of an open loop.
The “knock-knock” grabs your attention, creating a loop. You don’t get closure until the punchline. If I ended this email without delivering that punchline, a little piece of your mental energy would stay stuck in that unresolved loop.
(Spoiler: I promise I’ll deliver the punchline.)
Why do open loops matter?
Open loops aren’t just harmless little distractions.
They represent everything unresolved, big and small, across the Four Domains of life: Faith, Fitness, Family, and Finances.
These unfinished micro-commitments weigh you down, scatter your energy, and steal your focus… And let’s not forget, they chip away at your self-trust.
Think about the “next big thing” you want to accomplish.
How are you supposed to tackle it with a track record of unfinished business holding you back?
My Recent Loop
Here’s one I closed recently.
I took on a new business client. During our first week, it became clear that what he needed and what I could deliver didn’t align. He needed near full-time focus, and while I communicated upfront that I could only give part-time attention, we decided to give it a try.
Within a week, I knew it wasn’t going to work.
I should have ended it right there, but I dragged it out for another week, delaying what I knew I needed to do.
Today, I closed that loop.
We parted ways as friends, both with greater clarity and a renewed sense of energy.
That’s the power of closure.
[MEMORY EXCEEDED] The program you are trying to execute requires additional memory.
This reminds me of 2007.
Back then, I was an avid World of Warcraft player, living on Hot Pockets and Red Bull, raiding into the early hours of the morning. When a new expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, came out, I was hyped.
But when I downloaded the expansion, my computer crashed.
The new thing I wanted exceeded my system’s capacity.
I had two choices: keep playing the old version or upgrade my system.
It’s the same with your mental capacity, you may want something, but if you don’t have the capacity for it, the system won’t be able to handle the load.
And the fastest way to upgrade isn’t adding new tools or strategies, it’s closing the apps that are slowing you down.
Open Loops Stealing Your Focus
Here are examples of open loops across the Four Domains:
Finances
• Credit card balance maxed out.
• Taxes left unfiled.
• Client report overdue.
• Vendor contract to cancel.
Family
• Schedule the kids’ doctor appointments.
• Plan a long-overdue date night.
• Call your parents to check in.
• Budget meeting with your spouse.
Fitness
• Lose 10 pounds.
• Cancel an unused gym membership.
• Commit to a consistent workout plan.
• Meal prep for the week ahead.
Faith
• Start reading the Bible daily.
• Dedicate time to morning prayer.
• Reconnect with your spiritual community.
• Catch up on Bible study readings.
The 40-Day Mastery Challenge
One of the tools in the challenge is the Open Loop Exercise, a simple yet powerful way to identify and visualize the areas draining your energy.
Here’s the thing: when you start closing loops, momentum builds.
One loop closed often frees up energy and clarity for others.
Action beats anxiety every time.
The 40-Day Mastery Challenge is packed with tools to help you organize, prioritize, and close the loops that are holding you back.
In the meantime, grab a piece of paper, draw a few circles, and start closing your loops.
Much love,
Erin “Closing Loops” Alejandrino
PS: Knock Knock…
Who’s there?
